When it comes to photo editing on the iPhone, you’re really not
without your options. In fact, it sometimes feels like we’ve been
enduring a flood of these sorts of applications since the ye olden
Instagram hit the scene. However, none of them have been nearly as good
as PowerCam by developer Wondershare Software.
The app provides us with just about everything that we need to
accurately and effectively edit photos from our favorite mobile
device—and then some. For our full review, you need only to slide on
down below the break, as well.
Concept and Functionality
Before going any further, we’d like to simply get some of the basic
stuff out of the way. Yes, PowerCam comes with all of the standard photo
editing frills that you’d expect. You’ll get an absolute megaload of
filters to work with: With the full version, you’re staring down 120
unique items with which to spice up your images. You’ll also get various
resolution settings and the power to upload your work directly to your
favorite social media locations.
Now, all of this is great, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. What is different
about PowerCam are the copious extras. Have you ever wanted to tilt
shift your photos with a single touch of a finger? How about adding
color in splashes to your media? This effect, we have to admit, is
really quite bloody cool. And lastly, the app also includes a panorama
function which allows you to snap pictures of the landscape, and then
seamlessly combine them to form a single photo. It’s a magical
experience, and combining all three with the existing filters and
features, you’re staring down perhaps the most creative and powerful
photo editing tool the iPhone has seen yet.
Graphics and Design
Typically this is the point at which we would tell you how the app performs well, but just doesn’t look like
we might like it, too. However, with PowerCam that simply isn’t the
case. The app is absolutely gorgeous, and furthermore, the menus behave
flawlessly. We had a real blast sliding between filters, and the more
advanced features mentioned here worked like champs, as well. All in
all, PowerCam is a polished effort hiding truly impressive
functionality. And in our eyes, that’s about as good as compliments get.
Overall Value
The app itself won’t even cost you a dime, which is quite the boon
for those who want to experience some of the basic features without any
fiscal investment. On the other hand, unlocking the whole shebang will
cost only two dollars via in-app purchase. That’s a tremendous value,
and considering PowerCam offers a richness seldom seen in these kinds of
apps, that value is only heightened. All in all, the title is a simple
recommendation for those that need a new photo editing tool, or for
those looking to acquire their first.
PowerCam requires iOS 3.2 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A small expedite fee was paid by the developer to speed up the publication of this review.
